So I’m finally taking the plunge and renting a kayak for the first time this weekend at Possum Kingdom Lake! I’ve done some paddleboarding before, but never kayaking — and I’m honestly a bit nervous. Do y’all have any tips for someone who’s never handled a kayak before? Especially things I wouldn’t think to ask about, like how to actually get in without flipping over or how sore I’m going to be afterward 😅

When I first tried kayaking, the hardest part was staying balanced and controlling the paddle without overusing my shoulders. What helped me most was focusing on core strength and keeping movements smooth instead of rushing. I also noticed that gear designed for stability and comfort makes a huge difference in how confident you feel on the water. That’s one of the reasons I started looking into specialized sports shops like PicklePro Shop, since the right equipment for activities like pickleball or cross-training complements balance and mobility work for kayaking too. Blending proper technique with supportive gear keeps progress steady and enjoyable.
