The HW-40 feet are pretty awesome, but I don't know if those improvements made it into the non-pneumatic Avenger Direct feet. Anyone know?

As with any footer, they are only as good as the support that they are placed upon.
Exactly right. I have the pneumatic feet on my Avenger, which sits on a 3" thick maple slab. Does not pass the tap test. I don't have a pressure gauge that is useful down to single digit inflation pressures, but I have them inflated only enough to make everything level.
The HW-40 and the pneumatic air suspension feet are designed on different principles. The HW-40 used a special compound elastomer used to convert vibrations into heat. The pneumatic feet use air pressure which act as a damping springs to filter out vibrations. The pneumatic air feet can be adjusted/tuned (air pressure) to change the filter parameters. I use the pneumatic air feet, and they are they work very well.
