What services are really necessary when moving?

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately because I’m planning my third move in five years. The first time I moved, I tried to do everything myself with a rented van and a couple of friends. It turned into a full-day disaster — scratched table, lost screws, and we were exhausted before even unpacking. The second move I hired movers just for loading and unloading, and that already felt way easier. Now I’m wondering, what services are actually necessary when moving? Full packing service? Insurance? Storage? There are so many options that it’s hard to understand what’s really worth paying for and what you can safely skip.

From my experience, the most essential service is professional loading and transportation, especially if you have bulky furniture. Packing can go either way — if you’re short on time, it’s a lifesaver. When I was comparing options, I used a helpful calculator to calculate moving expenses and it really gave me a clearer picture of what different services would cost. It wasn’t about booking right away, just understanding the numbers. I also learned that basic valuation coverage is usually included, but for fragile or expensive items, extra insurance can give peace of mind. Storage only makes sense if there’s a gap between move-out and move-in dates. Honestly, it depends on how much stress you’re willing to handle yourself.
